What is Ziyarat?

Ziyarat (زيارة) literally means "visit" in Arabic. In an Islamic pilgrimage context, it refers to the visitation of sacred historical sites connected to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his companions, and early Islamic history.

Unlike Umrah and Hajj, Ziyarat is not obligatory but is highly recommended for pilgrims visiting Madinah and Makkah. It deepens spiritual connection and provides historical education.

Essential Ziyarat Sites in Madinah

1. Masjid al-Nabawi (Prophet's Mosque)

The burial site of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The green dome marks the Rawdah — the area between the Prophet's grave and his pulpit, described as "a garden from the gardens of Paradise." It is the second holiest site in Islam.

**Distance from city center**: Central Madinah

**Time needed**: 1–3 hours minimum (allow more for prayers)

2. Masjid Quba

The first mosque built in Islam, constructed by the Prophet ﷺ upon arriving in Madinah. Praying two rak'ahs here is equivalent to performing Umrah in reward, according to hadith.

**Distance from Masjid Nabawi**: 5km

**Time needed**: 30–60 minutes

3. Masjid al-Qiblatayn (Mosque of Two Qiblas)

The mosque where the Qibla direction was changed mid-prayer from Jerusalem to Makkah, in the second year of Hijra. A historically significant site for Muslims.

**Distance from Masjid Nabawi**: 4km

**Time needed**: 20–30 minutes

4. Mount Uhud & Martyrs Cemetery

Site of the Battle of Uhud (625 CE). The graves of the martyrs, including Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib (the Prophet's uncle), are here. A deeply moving site for reflection.

**Distance from Masjid Nabawi**: 5km

**Time needed**: 45–90 minutes

5. Al-Baqi Cemetery

One of the oldest Islamic cemeteries, containing the graves of many of the Prophet's family members and companions. Located adjacent to Masjid Nabawi.

**Time needed**: 20–30 minutes

6. Badr Battlefield (Day Trip)

The site of the Battle of Badr (624 CE) — 155km from Madinah. A significant Ziyarat destination for pilgrims who have time for a day trip. See our dedicated Badr guide for details.
