Makkah to Madinah: The Haramain Route

The journey between the two holiest cities in Islam is one of the most traveled routes in the Muslim world. Millions of pilgrims make this journey each year, either as part of a complete Umrah itinerary or for the spiritual experience of visiting both sacred cities.

**Distance**: 450km

**Duration**: 4.5–5 hours (private taxi, normal traffic)

**Highway**: Route 60 (Haramain Highway)

Why Take a Private Taxi Instead of the Haramain Train?

The Haramain High Speed Railway connects Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City. It is faster (2.5 hours) and often cheaper (from SAR 65) but:

  • Requires booking in advance (often sells out)
  • Not door-to-door — you need additional transport to/from stations
  • Luggage can be challenging on busy days
  • No flexibility in timing

  • A private taxi is door-to-door, departs on your schedule, and is ideal for families or pilgrims with significant luggage.

    The Route: What You'll Pass

Departing Makkah via the Haramain Highway (Route 60), the route passes through:

  • Jeddah surroundings (you pass near Jeddah but don't enter)
  • Rabigh — a coastal town on the Red Sea
  • Badr (can arrange a stop for an additional fee)
  • Khaybar region (historical battle site)
  • Arriving in Madinah from the south via King Faisal Road

  • Best Time to Travel

  • **Avoid**: Directly after Fajr and Isha prayers (peak traffic near Haramain)
  • **Avoid**: Thursday/Friday afternoon (weekend travel rush)
  • **Best**: Mid-morning (9–11am) or early afternoon (1–3pm)
  • **Ramadan**: Post-Suhoor departure (~4–5am) or early evening before Iftar
